How Does Zika Spread?

Zika is primarily transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, the same ones that carry dengue and chikungunya.

Symptoms of Zika

Zika often causes mild or no symptoms. However,  it can cause fever, rash, joint pain, red eyes, and muscle aches.

Zika virus infection is often asymptomatic, meaning many people infected with Zika won't experience any symptoms at all. But for those who do, symptoms tend to be mild and appear within 3-7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.

Zika infection during pregnancy can lead to serious birth defects, including microcephaly, a condition where a baby's head is smaller than expected.
